?Brocatelle marble planter, Rome circa 1800
Beautiful monolithic planter in the shape of an oblong bowl.
It features wide, protruding edges and a flared body resting on four bronze feet shaped like lion claws.
The sides are punctuated by two highly embossed rings, treated in the antique style and suspended from gadrooned brackets.
Brocatelle marble from the Jura.
Beautiful condition, minor restorations.
Italy, Rome circa 1800.
Dimensions:
Width: 75 cm; Height: 25 cm; Depth: 50 cm
Our opinion:
Our planter is directly inspired by the large antique basins reused on the fountain in Piazza Farnese in Rome, themselves from the Baths of Caracalla. Resting on lion claw-shaped feet and adorned with two stylized ring handles, it illustrates the neoclassical craze at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries for models from Antiquity, revisited on a decorative scale for clients of the Grand Tour.
