?The mirror features double-framed panels framed with moldings decorated with acanthus leaves.
The uprights rest on scrolled feet adorned with acanthus leaves; the sides are embellished with swags of small flowers. The spectacular openwork pediment, treated like delicate lacework of leafy tendrils, is centered with a bust of Flora. The whole is further enhanced by rare appliqués of green, red, and yellow stained glass, arranged in the spandrels and imitating floral scrolls.
In very fine condition, with original gilding and mercury glass.
Italian work, Venice, circa 1750.
Our opinion:
This mirror is a true masterpiece of decorative sculpture. The virtuosity of the openwork scrollwork, the elegance of the design, and the richness of the decoration testify to a particularly refined craftsmanship.
Its state of preservation is remarkable, notably for the preservation of its original ornamentation and its fragile openwork pediment, elements that have very often disappeared or undergone significant restoration over time.
Its uniqueness also lies in its precious applications of colored Murano blown glass. This subtle addition of color perfectly illustrates the exceptional mastery of glassmaking developed in Venetian workshops, enriching the gilded sculpture with luminous effects and lending great preciousness to the whole.
