Large giltwood overmantel, Provence, Louis XV period, circa 1760

Impressive overmantel in green lacquered linden wood with olive leaf undersides for the paneling and gilt wood for the decoration. The glazing bead frame is violin-shaped; it features acanthus clasps adorned with intertwined bunches of grapes and vine leaves.
The upper crosspiece features a large unfurled acanthus leaf surmounted by a reserve of acanthus clasps intertwined with branches on a wood paneled background, with a garland of roses suspended by rings in the center.

High-quality carving combining finesse and liveliness.

Original leaf gilding.

The three mercury glasses. Very well preserved. Provence, Lower Rhône Valley, Louis XV period, circa 1760-1765.

Our opinion:

The abundance and liveliness of the wine decoration on our trumeau are characteristic of the best workshops in the Rhône Valley.
The slightly asymmetrical nature of the acanthus decoration and the presence of motifs that herald the Louis XVI style (roses, rings) allow us to date it to the 1760s.
The very large size and the presence of three large mercury glasses, which were extremely expensive at the time, indicate that it was a highly prestigious commissioned work.
