?A Japanese lacquer travel cabinet with two doors.
Superb Takamaki-e decoration (relief achieved by sprinkling gold and copper powder onto black urushi lacquer), characterized by an elegant and balanced composition.
The front features two finely modeled vases of flowers, symmetrically arranged on either side of a large keyhole escutcheon adorned with an engraved copper cartouche.
The vases, rendered in gold and nuanced brown relief, display rich bouquets of peonies and flowering branches against a backdrop of ethereal mountains.
The corners, hinges, and fittings are made of chased and gilded copper, decorated with stylized scrolls, forming a precious frame around the whole.
The sides display the same refined theme of vases and flowers in vertical compositions of great restraint. The interior, composed of numerous drawers of varying sizes, features a floral vase motif, executed in gold and copper powder and embellished with aventurine glitter. The handles, hinges, spandrels, and locks are made of finely engraved and gilded copper.
The cabinet rests on a base of gilded oak. The finely carved frieze is decorated with a grid pattern and foliate acanthus leaves, highlighted by engravings in the gesso.
The cabriole legs terminate in deer hooves, connected by a scrolled stretcher adorned with scrolls and foliage.
